I made a small but significant addition to the page on 富拉尼人, but frankly I'm punching above my weight here. I think my grammar and the terms are correct; I know the contents of the edits are accurate, though they could be expanded on. Any corrections or suggestions encouraged (in the spirit of Wikipedia). Also if any fluent Chinese speakers/writers are interested in expanding/enhancing/creating articles on African languages an peoples, I'd be interested in collaborating (as time permits). --A12n (留言) 2009年3月13日 (五) 17:34 (UTC)

If you are the creator of original content, you can add text on original article to show you are going to publish such content in GFDL(in English).
You may also refer an example in this Baidu Baike article, that was published under GFDL so can be used in Wikipedia.
By the way, as content was seen copied from the Internet, we cannot verify if you are the original author, therefore a copyright violence template was put in that entry, I hope you can understand.─域奇(UTC) @ 2009年4月6日 (一) 23時00分 (UTC+8)

Wikimedia Conference Japan

Hello, this is most likely relevant to Chinese speaking Wikipedians living inside/near Japan. I would like to let you know about Wikimedia Conference Japan. This is a local version of the Wikimania conference in Japan. It is scheduled to be held sometime during 21-23 November this year in Tokyo, Japan (most likely to be one-day long). The details are being worked out at meta:Wikimedia Conference Japan and the mailing list, and the relevant translations are provided in meta:Wikimedia Conference Japan/en, meta:User:Makotoy/Wikimedia Conference Japan. Although a major potion of the participants is expected to be Japanese, we would like to have non-Japanese speaking presenters and/or audiences as much as possible. For example comparison between different language editions would be a great enlightenment to largely monolinguistic Japanese users. Please feel free to contact us in the talk pages or through wikimail. We are grateful if you could help us spread the word about this conference (translation into different languages, advertisement suggestions, etc.) regards,--Makotoy (留言) 2009年5月17日 (日) 17:25 (UTC) (contact me at meta:User:Makotoy)

(more details) The location is yet to be fixed, but currently we are negotiating with the University of Tokyo to rent some of the classrooms/halls for this event. Possible themes of the presentations by non-Japanese speakers would be the difference on how copyright violations are treated / how the mischievous users are handled / sociology of the users / what kind of articles are well written compared to other languages, etc. Of course other kinds of presentations are welcome. I think presentations by non-Japanese speakers will be a great education for the majority of participants who have never been outside of Japanese Wikipedia to know about other language editions (I have a sense that this is one characteristic of Japanese Wikipedia in particular). --Makotoy (留言) 2009年5月20日 (三) 11:34 (UTC)

Cantonese people? It depends, there are some many Cantonese around the world. It depends on which region you are talking about. For those Cantoneses who live outside of mainland China, a lots of them can speak English, for the one in mainland China, they are catching up now. Conversion from traditional to simplified

  • Hi, I have my user preferences "language" configured to English (so I get mediawiki messagens in English) and my "variant" configured to zh-cn (so I expect to see the article text in simplified characters). However that doesn't work and I only see the traditional characters in the article text. The same happens when I'm not logged in and click on the tab to select zh-cn. The conversion only works if I'm logged in AND choose zh-cn both as language and variant. I think that's a bug on the system.
PS: A temporary glue would be to add another parameter on the tabs making URLs end with (&language=zh-cn&variant=zh-cn) instead of just (&variant=zh-cn)
PS2: My browser is in english so that's might be a problem if that information serves as a parameter to the software.--Risingsun (留言) 2009年2月12日 (四) 20:18 (UTC)
After installing a zh-cn browser, when I'm not logged, the characters now change to simplified just by clicking the tabs, as it should be. When I log and change the language (not the variant) on my preference to other than zh-cn it doesn't work as when I was not using a zh-cn browser.--Risingsun (留言) 2009年2月13日 (五) 01:37 (UTC)
The language in Preference only changes the mediawiki interface. The trad/simplified conversion in an article is by switching the tabs at the top next to the 'watch/unwatch' tab. Once you are logged in and select a 'variant', it should be the one you see next time you log in (i.e. becomes 'default' of your account) irrgardless of your system/browser.—Ben.MQ 2009年2月13日 (五) 10:07 (UTC)
Well as I said before, that's not working. Do the test yourself: change your preference language to english (or other different than zh) and see if that works.--Risingsun (留言) 2009年2月13日 (五) 12:30 (UTC)
Sorry for this super late reply, but I think it will be fixed when MediaWiki is updated next time.—Ben.MQ 2009年5月30日 (六) 13:53 (UTC)

Swedish and Chinese Wikipedia

The Chinese language Wikipedia is the 12th biggest by article count, having 257,000 articles and an annual growth of +43%. On position 11 is the Swedish language Wikipedia, having 319,000 articles but an annual growth of only +12%. If my calculation is correct and this difference in growth rate remains, the two will both have 350,000 articles on April 16, 2010. It could happen a little sooner or later, but it will happen. How should we prepare for this event? Perhaps with a competition or a WikiProject of some kind? Any ideas? --LA2 (留言) 2009年6月21日 (日) 21:49 (UTC)

Foreign words

Greetings, Chinese wikipedia.

I have a question about the Chinese language.

How exactly does the Chinese language handle foreign (English) words? Languages like Spanish, German and French are easily able to adapt to new words because they use the same type of writing system (Roman), and Japanese is able to write words from English origin with their Katakana alphabet.

So how do the Chinese handle it? Does the Chinese language also have some sort of Katakana alphabet? Or does the Chinese language actually make new symbols for it?

For example, how do you write "Wikipedia" in Chinese? --87.211.160.4 (留言) 2009年7月22日 (三) 01:10 (UTC)

  • U own a great question that have has a simple solution in Chinese language, I may say.

Without any alphbet first to spell words then to express meanings, we directly use characters, each of them are independent and pronounces only one sound. As handling words of other languages, we with our styles try the best to pick up their exact meanings, then interpret them with several characters, if one can not do the job.

For example, in 字母 that stands for alphabet, means words, as mother. Alphabet thus becomes the mother of words. Exceptions of just simulating the pronunciations exist in the cases of proper nouns and a few others like in the field of science. Such as 巴拉克‧歐巴馬 is to Barack Obama, the six characters present sequently to the sounds of ba-rac-k o-ba-ma. However by the word Wikipedia, 維基 do the same to mimic wi-ki, 百科全書 are to translate encyclopedia. The full Chinese writing is 維基百科全書.

I do hope it'd makes sense to you. :) Philinwiki (留言) 2009年7月28日 (二) 18:16 (UTC)

  • I see, I understand it now. It makes very good sense.

尊敬的管理員您好:

Hi!

Hi! I'm from Polish Wiktionary. We are translating our templates into various languages (our top 50 - including Chinese). I wonder if you could help us with translation of just a few linguistic terms.

How about that? Best regards! --PiotrekSzwecja (留言) 2009年7月31日 (五) 22:42 (UTC)

  • Sources mean what did you use to write an article, for example: I used Japanese-Chinese dictionary, so I write it down in sources section. I'm very grateful for your help so far. I hope you can get us the other words as well. Regards! --PiotrekSzwecja (留言) 2009年8月1日 (六) 08:44 (UTC)
  • It seems to me that:
    1. 轉寫 is to change, at the alphabet to alphabet basis, words from different alphabetic systems.
    2. Transcription is to change within the same language from the sounds to the texts, or otherwise.
    3. 音譯 (transliteration) makes the change based on the sounds, while 意譯 (translation or paraphrase) does on the meanings. They both aren't necessary between aphabetic systems.
    4. BTW in zh-hant/zh-hans, zh indicates zhong-wen (中文, ie, the Chinese language), Han (, ie, the largest race in China which invented/uses zhong-wen so far), t (traditional), s (simplified). #

Could you remove them please, since the page is not editable for me Loreleil (留言) 2009年7月31日 (五) 08:09 (UTC)

* Actually in the page Wikipedia:Guestbook_for_non-Chinese_speakers, there are 3 interwikis, with 3 different names and 2 different IP addresses, all link to this page we're on now. They are here, Click here to leave your message right now, and Review other visitors' messages.
Why is that? And perhaps "Guestbook" isn't the best word to title the pages without doubts in English. I, a native Chinese and a new hand in Chinese Wikipedia, feel quite confused. But besides greetings in here, it's very good to write at one's will for any non-Chinese speaker. That's for sure. #

Dear friends, I do not recall where read about this magical square and its attribution to Yang Hui. en:Magic square#Albrecht_D.C3.BCrer.27s_magic_square states:

"The order-4 magic square in Albrecht Dürer's engraving Melencolia I is believed to be the first seen in European art. It is very similar to Yang Hui's square, which was created in China about 250 years before Dürer's time."

Can anybody provide details about this? Is it possible to post an image similar to file:Magic square Lo Shu.png at commons:category:Magic squares?

Can anybode provide more details about 6x6 type magic square and explanations available at Rainer Typke page?

I appreciate all your help and thank in advance. Best regards

Swedish and Chinese Wikipedia

Earlier, in June, I posted an estimate that the Chinese Wikipedia would soon outgrow the Swedish one. However, recent growth in zh.wp has not been as large as I assumed. Chinese growth is still larger than in Swedish, but by a smaller margin, so the catch up will take longer. In fact, Chinese growth is so uneven that I can't predict when it will happen. --LA2 (留言) 2009年9月1日 (二) 21:17 (UTC)

  • The statistics is interesting and started with a nice viewpoint. The logics behind those numbers confuse me, still I can offer two remarks, though no question asked.
    1. Certainly the official political restraints are easy suspects, but it seems hard to account for the acute changes of the growth here.
    2. There is no zh. wp article written in English, and little possibility of many robot-translated to Chinese. The related technology isn't so high as I know. #

I need translation help

Hi. I would need help of somebody from Chinese Wikipedia who is skilled in translation from English to Chinese and also can use Photoshop program to change images. Few years ago, I draw a map of Banat region (in Romania and Serbia): http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Banat05.png and Chinese Wiki user Xieza translated this map into Chinese: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Banat05-zh.png However, I recently created an improved version of original English-language version of the map (which you can see on the map page of English version) and I think that this improved version should be translated into Chinese as well and that old Chinese language version map should be replaced with the improved version. So, is anybody here able to translate improved version of the map into Chinese and to upload it instead of the old Chinese language version? Thank you. - PANONIAN -—以上未簽名的留言是由212.69.0.211對話 貢獻)於2009-09-20T11:31:55加入。

Also, if you cannot translate all place names from the map, perhaps you can visit this page: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File_talk:Banat05-zh.png and if you can translate any of the names on that page into Chinese, please wrote your translated names on that page, so I hope we will eventually collect all translated names to be able to draw an improved Chinese language map. - PANONIAN -—以上未簽名的留言是由212.69.0.211對話 貢獻)於2009-09-20T12:10:55加入。
I've made some translations per Google Translate, since I'm not so familiar with those languages. Thus, you may find some Magyar‎ users and Deutsch‎ users in our babel categories. Anyhow, you can find a full list of languages the Chinese wikipedians speak, go to Wikipedia:Babel. And, please remember to put four tildes ~~~~ to add a signature. Best regards.--Jimmy XuWikibreaktalk·+ 2009年9月20日 (日) 12:41 (UTC)
Thanks, that was fast. Basicaly, we now only need translation of the name of Romanian town Sânnicolau Mare and perhaps you can check again is 红钢correct translation of Oţelu Roşu (it looks somewhat strange compared with other names). - PANONIAN - 212.69.0.211 (留言) 2009年9月20日 (日) 13:07 (UTC)
Google Translate gives "红钢" to "Oţelu Roşu", I'm not sure for that either. And for "Sânnicolau Mare", Google Translate gives out an unrelated result. Maybe you can find someone who knows Română‎. Best regards.--Jimmy XuWikibreaktalk·+ 2009年9月20日 (日) 13:22 (UTC)
Aha. Seems that Sânnicolau Mare has two versions of the name - the other one is Sînnicolau Mare: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sannicolau_Mare and the second version is translated by google into simplified chinese as 大圣尼古拉 and into traditional Chinese as 大聖尼古拉 - so, which version we should use? As for Oţelu Roşu, its German name is Ferdinandsberg: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Otelu_Rosu, so I tried google translation from German and I got 費迪南德山 in Chinese traditional and 费迪南德山 in Chinese simplified, so which version of this name should be used? - PANONIAN - 212.69.0.211 (留言) 2009年9月20日 (日) 15:18 (UTC)
As you have mentioned above, you have a -zh in your file name. So the point is to keep unified in the file. If you want to use simplified Chinese, then all the characters should be simplified, and vice versa. Regards.--Jimmy XuWikibreaktalk·+ 2009年9月20日 (日) 15:22 (UTC)
Ok, I do not know much about difference between traditional and simplified Chinese. So, basically, zh Wikipedia use traditional Chinese, right? then I will use traditional Chinese names of the towns in this map - I will try to draw new Chinese language version of the map by copy-paste. - PANONIAN - 212.69.0.211 (留言) 2009年9月20日 (日) 16:39 (UTC)
  • The "t" stands for Traditional Chinese used in ROC and Hong Kong. The "zh" stands for Simplified Chinese. BTW, the two English letters "zh" together is the first phonetic symbol to spell 中文 (meaning Chinese language) used in PROC. # Philinwiki (留言) 今天, 02:36 AM (UTC+8)
One point to clarify, zh is the short form of Zhong Wen, which means Chinese in general. There are two representations of Chinese, zh-hans and zh-hant: While letter 't' is used to represent Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese is represented by letter 's'. zh.wikipedia uses both simplified and traditional Chinese with a conversion system.—〖Tlrmq^太辣·勿昆新論題〗 今天, 01:47 PM (UTC+8)

Hm, but if the map has zh in its name, then which name versions I should use from google translation - traditional or simplified? - PANONIAN - 212.69.0.211 (留言) 今天, 03:11 AM (UTC+8)

If you would like to follow the current practice of the United Nations and the Peoples Republic of China (PRC), please use Simplified Chinese. Traditional Chinese is currently used in Hong Kong, Republic of China or Taiwan; and before 1950s is used in mainland China (PRC).—〖Tlrmq^太辣·勿昆新論題〗 今天, 01:47 PM (UTC+8)

I finished my map now, you can see it here: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Banat05-zh.png - I hope that you can compare it with original English version to see are there any mistakes in the translation: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Banat05.png - I used traditional Chinese in the map because of the following reasons: 1. google translation page was not able to translate all Serbian and Romanian names into simplified Chinese, but it was able to translate them into traditional Chinese, so I used names that I had, 2. original author of the Chinese map version also used traditional Chinese (for example traditional name 基金達 used for Kikinda, not simplified one, which would be 基金达), but he, however, used simplified name 蒂米什瓦拉 for Timişoara instead traditional one, which would be 蒂米甚瓦拉. I tried to use traditional variants in all names, so I hope that you can check if all names are translated well, and if anybody have any suggestions how this map can be improved, please post your suggestions here: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File_talk:Banat05-zh.png Thank you. - PANONIAN - 81.18.53.52 (留言) 2009年9月22日 (二) 11:36 (UTC)

I replied you at commons:File_talk:Banat05-zh.png, and slightly modified your list of translation there to indicate the form of the words. I also added the -{}- mark on some Chinese above at the code, to cancel the automatic conversion effect here at Chinese Wikipedia. For Timişoara, the character 什 is sometimes used in Traditional Chinese as well.—〖Tlrmq^太辣·勿昆新論題2009年9月23日 (三) 02:45 (UTC)

How can we improve the usability for your language

We expect that with the implementation of LocalisationUpdate the usability of MediaWiki for your language will improve. We are now ready to look at other aspects of usability for your language as well. There are two questions we would like you to answer: Are there issues with the new functionality of the Usability Initiative Does MediaWiki support your language properly

The best way to answer the first question is to visit the translatewiki.net. Change the language to your language, select the 「vector」 skin and add the advanced tool bar in in the preferences and check out the new functionality. And make some changes in your user page. When there is a need to improve on the localisation, please make the necessary changess . It should update your localisation straight away. We would like you to report each issue individually at http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Usability_issues.

When there are problems with the support of MediaWiki for your language, we really want to know about this. It is best to report each issue separately. In this way there will be no large mass of issues to resolve but we can address each issue on its own. Consider issues with the display of characters, the presentation of your script, the position of the side bar, the combination of text with other languages, scripts. It is best to try this in an environment like the prototype wiki as it provides you with a clean, basic and up to date environment. The prototype wiki is available for five languages but you can select any of them, change the preferences to your language and test out MediaWiki for your language.

We would like you to report each issue individually at http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Languageissues. The issues you raise will all be assessed. It is important to keep each issue separate, because this will make it easier to understand the issues and find solutions.

PS This text has been approved by Naoko, Brion and Siebrand. Thanks, GerardM (留言) 2009年9月30日 (三) 21:51 (UTC)

The LocalisationUpdate extension has gone live

The LocalisationUpdate extension is now enabled for all Wikimedia projects. From now on new localisations that become available in SVN will become available to your project within 24 hours. Your localisations get into SVN from translatewiki.net typically within a day and at worst in two days. This is a huge improvement from the old practice where the localisations became available with new software. This could take weeks, even months.

The localisations done by our community at translatewiki.net are committed to SVN typically every day. When the system messages in English are the same as the local messages, they will now be inserted in a file and are available for use in all our projects in a timely manner

What this means for you

Local messages have an impact on the performance of our system. It is best when messages are as much as possible part of the system messages. In order to remove unnecessary duplication, all the messages that have a local localisation and are exactly the same as the system message will be removed. What we ask you to do is to compare and proof read the messages in translatewiki.net and the local messages. You can then either remove local messages when the translatewiki.net message is to be preferred or, you can update the message at translatewiki.net.

Messages that are specific to your project will have to stay as they are. You do want to check if the format and the variables of the message are still the same.

Why localise at translatewiki.net

When you localise at translatewiki.net, your messages will be used in all Wikimedia projects and eventually in all MediaWiki based projects. This is how we provide the standard support for your language. When messages change, at translatewiki.net you will be prompted to revisit your translations. Localising is more efficient because we have innovated the process to make you more efficient; there is text explaining about messages and we have applied AJAX technology to reduce the number of clicks you have to make. —以上未簽名的留言是於2009年10月1日 (四) 00:04 (UTC)之前加入的。

How to provide link to other language portion of Wikipedia?

How do I provide a link to the English Wiki? I tried to use something like Jerome A. Cohen, but doesn't seem to work. It seems to work perfectly here, but on the page where I edited, the text between brackets disappeared. Sagaliba (留言) 2009年10月1日 (四) 20:18 (UTC)Sagaliba

Do you mean WP:POPUP or en:WP:POPUP?—〖Tlrmq^太辣·勿昆新論題2009年9月30日 (三) 02:42 (UTC)
That's a very similar concept, but the one I'm referring to can be embedded in an article to display extra information.   — C M B J   2009年9月30日 (三) 04:49 (UTC)
Or maybe you mean this:

Translation Request of article about Austrian writer Klaus Ebner

Hello,

I am Irina Walter from Austria, interested in literature and working on a project to translate the article about Austrian writer K. Ebner into other Wikipedia languages. Thus I would like to have this article also translated into the Chinese language, be it in its original length or in a shortened summary layout or even as a first stub. I hope I am in the right place to put my request. Source texts are available in different languages, here are the most important:

If you have further questions, please don't hestitate to contact me on my English or German user page. Thank you very much for your endeavors!

It is because most of the name reactions with English names are more commonly used than those with Chinese names. For instance, Diels-Alder反應 has far more search results than 狄爾斯-阿爾德反應. As I do not understand Chinese I cannot mark words like Carl Benz, Black Forest, Karlsruhe, etc. Could you have a look at the article in that respect? And last but not least I will not be able to control vandalism - so could you put the article on your watchlist? Wiktionary Hover: a JavaScript on double-click

Wikinews proposes a script to display the Wiktionary definition in a small board, when one double-click on a word. It's already been installed on more than 13 wikimedia sites, for example in the following Wiktionairies gadgets: in French and in Italian.

To add it here, we should vote for an administrator, in:

  1. MediaWiki:Gadget-dictionaryLookupHover.js, copies without the guillemets : "importScriptURI('http://en.wikinews.org/w/index.php?title=MediaWiki:Gadget-dictionaryLookupHover.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript');"
  2. MediaWiki:Gadgets-definition, adds "* dictionaryLookupHover|dictionaryLookupHover.js"
  3. MediaWiki:Gadget-dictionaryLookupHover, describes the gadget. JackPotte (留言) 2009年11月21日 (六) 10:10 (UTC)
Before, you can test individually the English version on this site, by copying my User:JackPotte/monobook.js into yours. JackPotte (留言) 2009年11月21日 (六) 10:17 (UTC)
Maybe we'll hold a small vote in our Village Pump. But to be honest, I don't think those definitions from zhwikisource zhwikt would be as useful as those from enwikisource enwikt... Lots of red links, indeed.--Jimmy Xu560·+ 2009年11月21日 (六) 10:20 (UTC)
Do you mean wikt?—Ben.MQ 2009年11月21日 (六) 10:24 (UTC)
Okay, there's a problem. Since Chinese (as long as other east-Asian languages like ja or kr) does not separate "words" with spaces, it's impossible to select a "word" (mostly one or two characters) just by double-clicking on it. Instead, it'll attempt to find the definition for the whole sentence.--Jimmy Xu560·+ 2009年11月21日 (六) 10:26 (UTC)
Thank you, I've just reported your feedback to the developers. JackPotte (留言) 2009年11月21日 (六) 14:10 (UTC)
In my experiments, double clicking seems to work fine in japanese (at least in firefox. I imagine this is something browser dependant). Its unclear if it works in chinese. At some point i intend to implement an alternate method of selecting words. Bawolff (留言)
In Japanese I think if you double click on a character it will select all the other character of the same type (Hiragana, Katakana, Kanji, or western characters), but they are not one word. In Chinese there is only one type of character (Hanzi) therefore the entire sentence is selected)—Ben.MQ 2009年11月22日 (日) 05:29 (UTC)
Thanks for the input. I have made it so that people can highlight specific words, and press a key combo (default ctrl+shift+L, but combo is configurable). Hopefully that will resolve issues with Chinese and languages that use similiar writing systems. Bawolff (留言) 2009年11月28日 (六) 01:26 (UTC)

Neologisms in Chinese

你好! I am sysop of Wikipedia in Kalmyk (Oirat) language. Could somebody explain how new, modern words like "photography", "bus", "password", "file", "Wikipedia", "computer" appear in Chinese language? It looks like almoust no loan words in Chinese exist. Is any algorithm of creation of new words in Chinese? Are new words phonetically simplified version of origin (Bodhidharma -> Potidama, Latin -> Lati, Dharma -> Fa?) or they are word-to-word translation? I am interested because during localisation of MediaWiki these words are needed. Thanks, Huuchin (留言) 2009年11月24日 (二) 15:45 (UTC)

Hi Huuchin. The translation of neologisms into Chinese mainly follows two principles:
  • free translation (意譯, translation according to meaning)
  • phonetic transcription (音譯, translation according to sound, for "proper nouns" including names of people, places etc.)

eg.:

photography -> 攝影 (literally "taking in images", 攝: take in, absorb; 影: image, shadow)
bus -> 公共汽車 (literally "public vehicle", 公共: public——公: public; 共: together with, to share; 汽車: vehicle; 汽: steam; 車: cart (originally), car (derived))
also: 客車 (literally "vehicle for guests", 客: guest, traveller; 車: car)
also: 巴士 (ba1 shi4, phonetic)
password -> 密碼 (literally "undisclosed code", 密: undisclosed; 碼: code)
file -> 文件 (literally "pieces of writing", 文: writing; 件: (pieces of))
Wikipedia -> 維基百科 (維基: wei1 ji1, selectively phonetic, also symbolism, 維: maintain, preserve; 基: foundation) (百科: shorthand for 百科全書 encyclopedia, literally "a complete book of a hundred subjects", 百: hundred (symbolic); 科: subject; 全: complete; 書: book)
computer -> 計算機 (literally "calculating machine", 計算: calculation; 計: count; 算: calculate; 機: machine)
also: 電腦 (colloquially, literally "electronic brain", 電: electricity, 腦: brain)
Bodhidharma -> 菩提達摩 (pu2 ti2 da2 mo2, a long-established method for translating Buddhism terminologies into Chinese (since ancient times), specific characters were invented and chosen for this purpose, not exactly sound-matching, hence alternative versions often co-exist)

In the past neologisms have almost always been translated according to the meanings that they have (as a way to preserve the Chinese language), but as the monopoly of the English language and Latin alphabet becomes increasingly prevalent there is an increasing trend to lean towards phonetic transcription as this makes the words more easily recognisable (also because Chinese and English are linguistically different and word-to-word translations don't often make sense). There are institutions in the major Chinese-speaking political entities that regulate the translation of terminology and other neologisms into Chinese, but these organisations often have conflicting results in terms of the translations that they choose to prefer. This high degree of confusion/disorder is further exacerbated by the spread of Internet as it makes words that individuals themselves have translated (which contradict the results from official institutions) spread much faster than the recommended results that old, slow-reacting official institutions would have otherwise put up on their websites, months, years or decades after the neologisms have come into use.

Hope this helps. —60.229.108.36 (留言) 2009年11月28日 (六) 02:00 (UTC)

I want to read articles in 正體

Hi, I'm a kowp user. I can read 75% of 正體, but not good at simplified figures. I wanna read articles in classical characters always, so I got to 'my preferences' and changed the variant from 'zh' to 'zh-tw', and saved. But still, I should click '台灣正體' to change the type of character. Is there no way to make '台灣正體' as my 'basic character'? Pudmaker (留言) 2009年12月3日 (四) 16:35 (UTC)

There are two drop-boxes in preferences page. The first one is 界面語言 or Language is actually the interface language. The second drop-box 字體變換 is for the content of the page. please ensure that you have set both (or at least the second) to zh-tw. that should give you what you want. —Ben.MQ 2009年12月4日 (五) 07:21 (UTC)
