1796年8月5日的卡斯蒂廖内战役，法国的义大利军团（英语：Army of Italy (France)）在拿破仑将军的率领下，击败了由达戈贝特·西格蒙德·冯·武姆泽（英语：Dagobert Sigmund von Wurmser）元帅所率领的奥地利军队。[1] 卡斯蒂廖内战役及洛纳托战役（英语：Battle of Lonato）为奥军第一次尝试解围曼图亚的两场主要攻势。当武姆泽率领三个纵队推进至加尔达湖东侧时，彼得·格沃兹达诺维奇（英语：Peter Quasdanovich）则率其指挥的部队至加尔达湖西侧。[2]奥军击退了法军，并迫使拿破仑放弃围城。[3] 然而，拿破仑却集结法军至格沃兹达诺维奇部所在地，并于持续一周的战斗后逼迫该部撤退。在解决格沃兹达诺维奇的部队后，拿破仑率军转向武姆泽的部队，并同样击败了该主力军。[4] 随后，法军击退了曼图亚的部队，并再次封锁与包围了该城。[5]
