班士（英文: Warren Delabere Barnes，1865年9月22日—1911年10月28日）是英國殖民地官員。從1888年到1910年[1]，他一直在馬來亞公務員隊伍擔任公職，之後他在1911年的五個月時間裡到香港擔任輔政司，1911年10月28日於輔政司任內病逝。[2]

生平

班士早年就讀於劍橋大學國王學院和劍橋大學彭布羅克學院，於1887年畢業。[3][4]

馬來半島

1888年，他被殖民地部任命為海峽殖民地官學生，一年後被派往汕頭學習潮州方言。[5][6][6][7] 他於1890年到新加坡，並於1891年11月在潮州通過期末考試。他於1893年獲委任為檳城第三任裁判官；同年稍後獲委任為霹靂州華民政務司；1899年為檳城高級裁判官兼華民政務司。1901年1月獲委任為檳城華民政務司；1903年8月獲委任為地政及礦務署署理署長；1903年11月獲委任為英國駐馬來聯邦檳城代理；1904年獲委任為海峽殖民地華民政務司。1904年5月，他被任命為中國事務、海峽殖民地和馬來聯邦秘書。1909年2月，他出席在上海舉行的國際鴉片委員會會議。[8] 1910年1月，他以英國代理身份返回檳城。

以他的名字命名的植物

1900年，班士在檳城古農本儂進行了一次探險，是以在山上架起一座三角形的燈塔。8月31日，他離開了拉普（Raub)，到達了古農本儂的一個附峰，他認為這個峰會就是Gunung Kluang Terbang。9月21日他回到了拉普。在探險過程中，他收集了不同植物，其中在海拔5000英尺（1524米）收集到的22種植物被亨利·尼古拉斯·里德利（Henry Nicholas Ridle）列入了名錄。[9]

到1913年，他發現的一種植物 — 桑寄生科的 Elytranthe barnesii Gamble 已經以他的名字命名。[10][11] 這種植物被描述為「榴蓮的寄生蟲」。[12]

香港

1911年6月7日，班士被任命為香港輔政司，接替梅含理於1月21日出任斐濟總督而懸空的位置。[13][14] 班士於1911年6月8日成為香港立法局的當然議員。[15][16] 1911年10月4日，他與英國駐廣州總領事 J.W. Jamieson 先生代表英國政府出席九廣鐵路深圳至廣州段開通儀式。[17][18]班士於1911年10月28日在跑馬地打馬球時心臟衰竭發作逝世，享年46歲。[19][20]遺體葬於香港墳場。蒲魯賢於1911年10月30日被任命為代理輔政司，並一直擔任此職直到1911年11月28日。[19]1911年1月22日至6月6日以及由同年11月29日起，由金文泰署理輔政司。來自馬來聯邦的施勳被任命為下一任輔政司，並於1912年就職。
