包括金茂大厦与香港新世界大厦在内的位于上海金融区的多幢办公楼均被疏散。成都西藏饭店的一名招待员称，在饭店疏散了所有的客人后，情况“平静了下来”。其间，四川的一间福特工厂的工人们也在大约10分钟内疏散完毕。成都的双流国际机场在地震后关闭，航管楼与地区雷达管制均被疏散。飞往成都的胜安航空班机转降在了邻近的昆明。在周一晚上8时（协调世界时12时），双流机场有限度地重新开放。

成都市区的部分居民楼出现了墙体开裂的现象，但未有建筑物倒塌。由于空中交通服务的中断，国泰航空推延了香港与伦敦之间的日间双向航班。北京的许多办公大厦亦被疏散，其中包括有北京奥运会组委会媒体办公室所在的建筑。但奥运场馆均未受损。此外，甘肃省境内的一列载有13箱燃油的货运列车出轨，在轨道变形后引发了火灾。

通往汶川的所有公路均遭损毁，导致救援的军队不能及时地进入震中。在四川与周边地区有超过2,300座中国移动的基站退出了服务，中国联通在汶川的网络彻底中断。在北川县，有80%的建筑倒塌。在什邡市，有两个化工厂的厂区坍塌，导致了数百人被掩埋以及80余吨液氨泄漏。在震中东北方向的都江堰市，一幢学校教学楼的坍塌导致了50人的死亡与900人被掩埋。埋有大量学生的聚源中学正在被平民与起重机挖掘。都江堰市是都江堰水利工程的所在地，这一古老的水利工程至今依然在发挥作用，并被列入了世界遗产名目。在这次地震中，著名的分水工程“鱼嘴”遭到了一定程度的破坏，但除此之外没有其他的损坏。

Shanghai Stock Exchange and Shenzhen Stock Exchange suspended trading of companies based in southwestern China. Copper rose over speculations that production in southwestern China may be affected, and oil prices dropped over speculations that demand from China will fall.

China Mobile had more than 2,300 stations suspended due to power disruption or severe telecommunication traffic congestion. Half of the wireless communications were lost in the Sichuan province. China Unicom's service in Wenchuan and four nearby counties were cut off, with more than 700 towers suspended.

Initially, officials were unable to contact the Wolong National Nature Reserve, home to around 280 giant pandas. However, China’s Foreign Ministry later said that a group of 31 British tourists visiting the Wolong panda reserve in the quake-hit area have returned safe and uninjured to the provincial capital. Nonetheless, the well-being of an even greater number of pandas in the neighbouring panda reserves remains unknown at this point in time.

The Zipingpu Hydropower Plant located 20 km east of the epicenter has been destroyed. The dam has severe cracks and "the plant and associated buildings have collapsed, and some are partly sunk.". The Tulong reservoir Upstream is in danger of collapse.About 2,000 troops have been allocated to Zipingpu, trying to release the pressure through spillway. In total, 391 dams, most of them small, were reported damaged by the quake.
