2019年1月7日当地时间清晨5时半，加蓬军队的三名士兵宣布发动军事政变。据BBC报导，总统阿里·邦戈·翁丁巴在此以前已被赶下台[3]，但政府没有证实有关消息。军方发言人暨加蓬国防及安全部队之爱国运动领导人－陆军中尉凯利·翁多·奥比昂在官方电台中表示其和其支持者及盟友对于总统翁丁巴的跨年日全国演说感到不满，批评总统“努力不懈的攀附权力”，且怀疑翁丁巴有没有能力继续担任总统一职。
奥比昂表示政变是针对在2016年总统选举时杀害同胞的当权者。奥比昂又宣称他们正成立“国家重整委员会”，希望恢复加蓬国内的民主制度[4][5]，并呼吁民众起义对抗政府，控制主要干道。
政变发生后，坦克车进驻首都利伯维尔，电台附近传出枪声[6]，全国的网络服务亦被中断三小时[7]，并且实施宵禁[8]。
六小时后[9]，政变宣布失败，政府已经控制局势，反抗的士兵被捕。
据报患重病的总统翁丁巴已经离国两个月，政变发动之时仍然身处摩洛哥接受治疗。
