英國最暢銷專輯列表

英國歷史上銷量最高的專輯是皇后樂團在1981年發行的合輯《Greatest Hits》，截至2014年2月售出逾6百萬張，其中約12萬張是通過數位音樂下載的形式售出^[1]。皇后樂團的第二張合輯《Greatest Hits II（英語：Greatest Hits II (Queen album)）》自1991年發行起售出約3.89百萬張，在英國專輯歷史銷量榜上排名第十位^[2]。在該榜單排名前40位的專輯中，有半數為英國本土藝人的作品^[3]。9張專輯為美國藝人作品，除英美兩國外入榜的還有愛爾蘭、加拿大、瑞典和牙買加藝人的專輯^[4]。五位藝人/團體有不止一張專輯入榜，他們是披頭四樂團、酷玩樂團、蒂朵、麥可·傑克森和皇后樂團，後兩者在前十位里分別占據兩席^[2]。出現最多的唱片公司是占有五席的Parlophone公司。出現最多的時代是2000年代，儘管音樂銷量在總體上呈現下跌趨勢以及網路盜版泛濫，榜單上還是有14張專輯在該年代中發行^[3]^[4]。

根據英國機構官方排行榜公司（OCC）的定義，專輯是指一種包含4首以上歌曲、或時長超過20分鐘的音樂出版物（英語：music release）^[5]。音樂雜誌《Record Mirror（英語：Record Mirror）》於1956年7月28日編寫了一張全國銷量前五唱片的周榜，那是英國歷史上第一次公開出版專輯的銷量^[6]。《Record Mirror》首張榜單的冠軍唱片是弗蘭克·辛納屈的《Songs for Swingin' Lovers!（英語：Songs for Swingin' Lovers!）》^[7]。自那以後，有三張專輯的銷量超過五百萬張，它們分別是皇后樂團的《Greatest Hits》、ABBA的《Gold: Greatest Hits（英語：Gold: Greatest Hits (ABBA album)）》和披頭四的《Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band》^[8]。排名前八位的專輯每張的銷量都超過了四百萬張^[9]。自1994年起，官方排行榜公司負責監視專輯的銷量，並編寫每周的英國專輯排行榜^[10]。

英國的音樂唱片銷售認證由英國唱片業協會授予^[11]。該協會自1973年4月成立後很快開始頒發認證^[12]。起初，認證的依據是專輯製造商獲得的收入多少：賺得七萬五千英鎊可獲得銀唱片認證，十五萬英鎊為金唱片而一百萬英鎊則是白金唱片^[12]。在之後的六年間，銀唱片和金唱片的門檻提高了一倍，而白金唱片的標準仍保持一百萬英鎊不變。1979年1月，該計算方法被廢除，認證的依據變為零售商的銷售單元：六萬張銷量為銀唱片，十萬張為金唱片，三十萬張為白金唱片^[12]。多白金認證的概念出現於1987年2月：例如，2×白金認證意為兩倍於白金認證的銷量，等於六十萬張銷量^{[注 1]}^[13]。在1973年4月前發行的專輯以1994年後的銷量為準，於2013年8月獲得了追加認證的頒發，如《Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band》獲得了3×白金認證^[14]。獲得最高認證的專輯是愛黛兒的《21》，得到了16次白金認證^[15]。
