Hey Translators
Hey Stinglehammer, thanks for your group on cross-wiki translation assignments. Your student Binjie Xiang (User:Xelephant), who translated en:Indian Camp（印第安人营地） into zh-wiki, is an outstanding translator. Her piece shows great capabilities in comprehending that fiction and interpreting these literary ideas/criticism into Chinese. However, the other participators lag far behind, and thus reflected their limitations in Chinese and English. Some articles had been removed speedily, because we believe these are machine-translated and unreadable. Perhaps FA/GAs in English Wikipedia are too challenging for them to handle with - in your next project, I would highly recommend you to guide them to target simple articles. In next few days, we would like to modify others' articles to match the Chinese Wikipedia qualification/standard. If you prefer, in your next program, we would love to coordinate with you on these translations before publishing them and getting these participators into troubles. - @Walter Grassroot： Many thanks! The students work over the entire semester to draft these article translations so I am very keen they have a positive experience and that their translations help add quality articles to Chinese Wikipedia. I am unclear why so many of the students are finding their work labelled 'poor translation' and nominated for speedy deletion. This is very demoralising and upsetting for the students. Particularly because they peer assess each other's translation work before it is published on Wikipedia. I am keen for the students to learn and understand and improve if there are specific problems with their translations so any feedback or support we can give them is all beneficial. Speedy deletions and accouns being blocked is less helpful. In choosing articles the students are advised that Featured articles and Good articles are judged to be the best quality ones to work on and we want their source article to be a quality text that is well-referenced and will enhance Chinese Wikipedia too. I am not sure what is meant by choosing 'simpler' articles. Do you mean the topic or the language used? I would be concerned that Start or Stub class articles may be of lesser quality and less well referenced so would be reviewed poorly when attempting to publish on Chinese Wikipedia. The assignment page for this semester's work is here. I am due to meet with the students on 1st February 2021 to review what happened on this occasion and look to start a new 1,500 to 2,000 word assignment which would be published by 14th May 2021. - Hey Stinglehammer, I apologize for this late response. It's touching that you fully concerned students' feeling, but I felt bad about you- they took advantage of your emotion. Their translated pieces seemed like they just use Google Translate and published those unreadable articles into Chinese Wikipedia. You mentioned they use an entire semester to write such article respectively, but most of articles look like 5-mins products. It also shocked me that most of them are taking a Master of Translation, because currently most high school students at Chinese Wikipedia can translate a better article. Hi Stinglehammer. I see you have moved 齐诺海燕 back to the main namespace. Unfortunately the translation still needs improvement. Passive voice such as "被欧洲稀有委员会协会(AERC) 接受了这一物种划分", "繁殖的个体曾被长期认为是南半球柔羽圆尾鹱的亚种", and "承认马德拉鸟类作为一个完整的物种后，它们被以英国鸟类学家保罗·亚历山大·齐诺命名" is unnatural in Chinese. I will certainly pass on the advice page about what to avoid to my students and also the advice about spaces before footnotes that Heihaheihaha highlighted. I wonder if you could assist me further by looking over the students general performance in all the articles on the assignment page here to see where there is best examples of work and those to definitely to highlight things to be avoided. - One further thing. Is the concern about the Content Translation tool your personal preference that it should be avoided or is there general consensus that it creates generally terrible translations? I know the students find it helpful at the beginning of their translation work but quality checking that they have changed all the machine translation to created more natural Chinese expressions every time is difficult. I also want to ask if there are different machine translation options that are better or worse as I know the tool uses (1) Google Translate (2) LingoCloud, (3) MinT and (4) Yandex.

- LingoCloud is the least bad out of the four. The passive voice in the first sentence messed up Google Translate, MinT, and Yandex bad. (see Wikipedia:翻译腔#普通语序＞把字句≫被字句) In the second sentence, Burns and his skull are not the same subjects. All four translations are missing the subject in the first two clauses. In terms of word choice, there are many existing phrases in Chinese that convey the same meaning as a word-by-word translation. These phrases should take priorities.
