三叉神經（trigeminal nerve）即第五對腦神經，是面部最粗大的神經，屬混合神經（含運動神經且含感覺神經），大部分為感覺纖維，小部分為運動纖維，因有三大支而得名。
三叉神經的感覺部分收集來自面部和頭部的資訊，運動部分則控制咀嚼肌。三叉神經的運動部分從腦橋與腦橋臂交界處出腦，再併入下頜神經，一同經卵圓孔穿出顱部。而它的感覺部分的胞體組成位於顳骨岩部尖端的三叉神經節，三叉神經節又分出三條分支，第一分支為眼神經（ophthalmic branch），第二分支為上頜神經（maxillary branch），第三分支為下頜神經（mandibular branch）。支配臉部、口腔、鼻腔的感覺和咀嚼肌的運動，並將頭部的感覺訊息傳送至大腦。
精細結構
- 第一分支：眼神經
眼神經是三條分支中最小的一支，僅含一般軀體感覺纖維，在三叉神經節處與上頜神經及下頜神經分開後，穿入海綿竇外側壁，在動眼神經和滑車神經下方經眶上裂入進入眶部。眼神經又有三條分支：淚腺神經、額神經、鼻睫神經。
- 第二分支：上頜神經
上頜神經僅含一般軀體感覺纖維，從三叉神經節出發後同樣進入海綿竇外側，在圓孔處出顱後進入翼腭窩，經眶下裂進入入眶部，成為眶下神經。它的主要分支有上牙槽神經（前、後、中），中腦膜神經，眶下神經 ，顴神經，下瞼神經，上唇神經，咽神經，腭大神經和腭小神經，鼻腭神經。
- 第三分支：下頜神經
下頜神經是三條分支中最粗大的分支，它還包括了三叉神經運動支。離開三叉神經節並從卵圓孔出顱後，它在翼外肌的深面分為前、後兩條主幹。除三叉神經運動支外，它包括的神經還有耳顳神經、頰神經、舌神經、下牙槽神經。
三叉神經的運動根連接三叉神經節遠端的感覺成分，並將其軸突分佈到咀嚼肌：咬肌，內側和外側翼狀肌，顳肌。
